Discovering the 11 Rarest Pokemon in Pokemon Go: A Comprehensive Guide to Your Next Adventure
- Within Pokémon Go are also some very rare and highly elusive Pokémon, making it even a challenge for the most dedicated player
- Unown: Psychic-type Pokémon, found only in special events They won’t hatch, evolve, or even appear anywhere in the wild; hence, it is indeed quite difficult to capture one
- Larvesta: This Pokémon doesn’t show up in the wild and can only be obtained from 5km eggs by spinning PokéStops It also needs 400 candies to evolve, so it’s a bit tougher
To this day, years after its release, it’s still one of the coolest games in the world The thrill of hunting for Pokémon never gets old; lots of people get super excited when they find a super-rare one Weather, seasons, and different habitats seem to make catching certain Pokémon even trickier, not to mention figuring out which ones are the absolute rarest and most wanted
1.Meltan and Melmetal
These two Pokémon are some of the strongest ever! They’re the first Mythicals that can evolve (Meltan turns into Melmetal) Plus, they’re the only Pokémon introduced in Pokémon GO, and they can only evolve there too But despite all that, finding a Meltan is crazy tough, and Melmetal is even harder to get.
To catch a Meltan, you have two options First, complete the ‘Let’s GO, Meltan!’ Special Research questline by catching 100 Kanto Pokemon The second method is more restrictive: transfer a Pokemon from Pokemon GO to Let’s Go games, then activate the Mystery Box like an Incense to attract Meltan for a while
As for Melmetal, you will need to evolve it from Meltan This requires a total of 400 candies If you do not have access to Let’s Go to consistently activate Mystery Boxes and have only caught one Meltan from Special Research, you will need to obtain Meltan candies through other means
- Use Rare Candies
- Make it your buddy
- Place it in a gym and feed it berries
One of the first Kalos Pokemon introduced to the game was Noibat, a Flying/Dragon-type that it’s also one of the rarest Pokemon introduced in quite a while. If you’re looking to obtain a Noibat, keep your eyes on your radar during windy weather, which boosts their chances of appearing.
Noivern is the real challenge because it requires 400 candies to evolve, and it can also hatch from ’10km’ eggs.
2.Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie
These three Legendary Pokemon are pretty cool because they’re the only ones that can appear in the wild Most Legendaries come and go in raids, but these three are always around So, why not include them on our list?
They are extremely rare, of course, but they are also region-locked Many people were able to obtain them by connecting with someone from another region during raids, especially now that remote raiding is possible It is advisable to wait until that option becomes available again They have returned to the raid pool a few times, so if you do not have them, just be patient!
3.Gimmighoul
Gimmighoul was introduced similarly to Meltan, requiring another game on Nintendo Switch to obtain this Pokémon; there are two ways to unlock them, with one being much more reliable than the other, but regardless, if you wish to ensure acquiring a Gimmighoul, you will need to obtain Pokémon Scarlet or Violet for your Nintendo Switch
You gotta save a postcard in Pokemon Go, link it to your Nintendo Switch game, and then send it into the game If you do this every day, you’ll score a Coin Bag Use that in Pokemon Go to make those tiny Gimmighouls appear Keep an eye out! And if you keep it up for 5 days, you’ll snag a Golden Lure Use that on a pokestop to turn it into a fancy Golden Pokestop It’s super rare, but you might even get a Roaming Form Gimmighoul from it
Evolving a Gimmighoul, much like evolving a Meltan, is super tough, ’cause you gotta collect 999 Coins You can only get these coins by beating Gimmighoul in Pokemon Scarlet or Violet, or sometimes from those Golden Lure Stops
4.Unown
This Gen 2 Psychic-type Pokemon is a weird one, since it’s so rare in the wild and has all these different styles that correspond to letters in the alphabet (or even punctuation marks) They’re super hard to come across, let alone catch, and you can’t get them through evolution or hatching And there’s no specific place where they’re more common
Even if you do catch one, your odds of landing another won’t go up, as their medal grants you no catch bonuses. They technically do exist out there but are among the rarest catches in the game, and during some events, they’ll spawn, but only certain letters, so the best chance you’d have at landing one is to go to an event or patrol highly populated areas with some spare Lures handy.
5.Larvesta
Larvesta doesn’t show up in the wild, but you can hatch it from 5km eggs Those eggs are pretty rare, and you get them by spinning PokéStops when you’ve got room in your egg stash
However, you can also obtain 2km eggs and 10km eggs from PokéStops, so even acquiring the correct egg is a risk Once you do obtain a Larvesta, you will need to collect 400 candies to evolve it, which presents an additional layer of difficulty, making its evolved form equally challenging to obtain
6.Pikachu Libre
Pikachu Libre is another Pokémon that is technically always available, but that doesn’t mean very many people have one This costumed wrestler is only obtainable at the top rank of the GO Battle League
It’s gonna take forever to get there since you gotta battle all the top players to reach the highest rank It used to be easier, but with all those GO Battle League updates? Not anymore
Time-Locked Pokemon
There are numerous Pokémon that cannot be easily caught on an ordinary day because they are restricted by time-sensitive events, seasons, rapid rotations, or other equally challenging situations For most of these, you will either need to wait for the events to recur or trade with someone Some of the particularly popular Pokémon in this category include (but are not limited to):
- Delibird (locked to the holiday season)
- Yamask (locked to the Halloween season)
- Most Legendaries (raids rotate, and they’re sometimes obtainable in other ways but are always only available for a short time before leaving again)
- Costumed Pokemon
- Clone Pokemon
- Armored Mewtwo
- EX Raid Pokemon, like Regigigas and Genesect
- Some Mythicals, like Genesect, Darkrai, and Deoxys
- Spiritomb (locked to Special Research and event-exclusive Field Research tasks)
- Wash Rotom (only appeared at GO Fest 2020, hasn’t been seen since)
- Skwovet, Falinks, Wooloo, Zacian, and Zamazenta (These Sword and Shield Pokemon appeared for one event in the summer of 2021 but are seemingly no longer available)

7.Pancham
There’s not much to say about this one, unlike some other Pokémon Pancham is just plain rare, with no special features It first appeared in 2018 and has been seen in a few events, but finding it in the wild is nearly impossible
It’s been a while since our scrappy buddy showed up at a specific event, so make sure your Poke Balls are ready for its comeback
8.Charcadet
Charcadet is another Pokemon trapped in 10km eggs, and like Larvesta, you can get it from spinning stops, but you might get 2km eggs or 5km eggs, it’s all down to luck. They are within the second most likely tier to hatch, but there are still a lot of Pokemon ahead of them that do have a better chance of hatching out of that specific egg.
Charcadet has two different forms that they can evolve into and both are quite involved. You’ll need to make the Charcadet your buddy and either defeat 30 Psychic Pokemon or defeat 30 Ghost Pokemon depending on what form you are aiming for. This can be done either through battling Gyms, the Battle league, or Battling against Team Rocket, and of course providing 50 candies.
9.Tirtouga and Archen
Each new set of Fossil Pokemon appears to begin with a low spawn rate before becoming more common later Initially, it was difficult to find Kabuto, Omanyte, and Aerodactyl Later, Cranidos and Shieldon posed a significant challenge Currently, Tirtouga and Archen seem to be scarce, while Lileep and Anorith have consistently been exceptions, never being extremely rare
Of course, it makes sense! Fossil Pokémon are extinct and brought back from fossils But it’s annoying when you’re trying to fill your Pokédex and can’t find these rare Pokémon They’re technically out there in the wild, but you won’t come across them often They’ve also been in eggs before, but not always
Archen, fortunately, is included in the Legacy 40 Special Research But this Special Research was only accessible to those who reached level 40 before they increased the level cap
10.Kecleon
Kecleon spawns in the wild, but unlike other Pokémon, you won’t see them on your map Instead, you gotta tap on PokeStops and hope a Kecleon shows up Then, try to knock it off to make it appear on the map, and finally, tap it to catch it
As there are far fewer PokeStops in the game than places on the map where Pokemon can spawn and Kecleon is a rare spawn on a stop anyway, it’s quite uncommon to find them about. Pokemon Go has done a few events where Kecleon are meant to have spawned more often, but they are still a rarity with a shiny being even more sought after.
11.Professor Pikachu
Professor Pikachu can be unlocked by anyone who is playing Pokemon Go, and you get one shot at obtaining this Pokemon as it’s a reward for maxing out a medal. Showcases in Pokemon Go have players entering in the largest of specific types of Pokemon, and you can only be in three showcases at one time, but once they end and a new one starts, you can find yourself entering more.
Not all PokeStops have showcases, but when they do, it’s a fun challenge for all players to try and hit them first!
Once you’ve won first place in 100 of them, you’ll get to catch your Professor Pikachu This does take time and dedication – along with saving all of the XXL Pokémon you happen to stumble upon
Special Research Mythicals
Mythical Pokémon have shown up in raids or been available through other methods, like Genesect, Darkrai, and Deoxys But the main way new Mythicals are introduced is through special research Mew was the first, followed by Celebi, Jirachi, Victini, and Meloetta, Zarude, and Hoopa’s Confined Form Since you can only do special research once and can’t trade most Mythicals, everyone is pretty much limited to having just one of each of these Pokémon
However, some people have access to shiny Mew and shiny Celebi; Mew’s shiny variant was unlocked as part of the All-in-One 151 questline, which is only available to those who purchased a Kanto Tour ticket, and Celebi’s shiny variant is currently only available to those who activated the Distracted by Something Shiny questline in 2020.
Obtaining Zarude is pretty tough because the Special Research that let us encounter it was only around for a short while I’m sure Niantic will do another event in the future for Trainers who missed out, but we’ll have to wait and see
