On New Year’s Eve 1994, Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach hosted the world’s largest concert, which saw a whopping 35 lakh fans in attendance.
The much-travelled Diljit Dosanjh spent the weekend in India after a couple of months of taking his Dil-Luminati Tour to Delhi. The news report indicates that some 35,000 squealing fans saw him go down at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. That is pretty massive by Indian standards. In relation to the biggest concerts viewed across the world, though, that of Diljit stands greatly dwarfed. This was 100 times the number of people who attended.
The Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro in December 1994, had an all-glam new year party. Earlier years saw big grand events where some big international artists performed their shows. On 31 December 1994, Rod Stewart performed at Copacabana and set a record with 35 lakh attendance at the beach, more than the population of several neighboring cities.
Three years later, French musician Jean-Michel Jarre equaled this record with his performance at the Oxygene in Moscow, another free concert. The 35-lakh attendance of these two gigs makes them a hundred times bigger than Diljit’s mega Delhi concert.
This is the largest concert in the world in terms of attendance.
But the free entry to attend a concert lets in one million or so. For a ticketed concert, it is much lesser, but those numbers are still pretty huge. Italian singer Vasco Rossi gave the biggest ticketed concert with 2.25 lakh people at his Modena Park event in 2017. The biggest ticketed concert in India happened to be that of Justin Bieber in Mumbai in 2021 and Diljit Dosanjh in 2023, where 50,000 people attended each of them.

Diljit Dosanjh concert: Queues of traffic near Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium were seen on Saturday when thousands of fans went to Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh’s concert in the city.
Several commuters took to social media to narrate the ordeal. In a post on X, a commuter said that it took him two hours to cover the stretch from the Lodhi Road flyover to Chirag Delhi due to heavy traffic.
